WA: Researchers say eucalypt pollen could lower cholesterol
Researchers say West Australian eucalypt pollen could help reduce cholesterol levels.
Agriculture WA researcher ROB MANNING says pollen from the state's Redgum trees, also
known as Marri trees, contain a high proportion of a fatty acid known as linoleic acid.
He says linoleic acid, also found in poultry, fish and cereals, helps to lower the
cholesterol level in humans.
He says eucalypt pollen could be used to boost the linoleic acid levels in honey.
Mr MANNING says the discovery after two years of research could provide WA beekeepers
with value-adding opportunities.
