FED: Probe call into claim Aust recruited Nazi = 2

Australia's major national Jewish organisation, the Executive Council of Australian Jewry,
said if the articles were substantially correct, the policy was indefensible.

"The scheme throws into sharp focus what would appear to have been the Australian
government's response after the Holocaust," president of the council Nina Bassat (Bassat) said
in a statement.

"In some circumstances, it was easier to get entry into Australia if you were a Nazi than
if you were a survivor of the Holocaust," she said.

Mrs Bassat said one of the most troublesome aspects was the scheme was not exposed when
Nazi war crimes were being investigated in 1986 by the federal government's unit on suspected
war criminals.
